Chiropractors diagnose and treat problems associated with spinal structure and the nervous system.  They believe that misaligned spinal joints have a profound negative effect on a healthy nervous system, and that such misalignment not only causes pain but lowers the body’s resistance to disease, and can result in other physical problems within the body.  Chiropractors manipulate the spine to realign the joints.  They may also use ultrasound and massage.  Chiropractors physically examine patients as well as obtaining x-rays before initiating any treatment.

Chiropractors work in chiropractic offices, doctor’s offices, hospitals, and other health care facilities.  They practice  in clean well lit surroundings, and usually work a regular forty hour week.

Successful Chiropractors are patient, compassionate, self-confident, have excellent communication skills, and have an interest in serving the public by reducing pain, and improving health.  Their interests lie in science and especially in the workings of the human body.

This is a  highly-rewarding and lucrative career for those with the right personality and the right education.  Salaries depend on place of employment and experience.  Due to an aging population and a greater interest in alternatives treatments, the need for chiropractors is expected to increase considerably in the coming years.

Education

To become a Chiropractor, you need to first complete at least a two year undergraduate program.  The program you take should include Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English.  Be aware that Chiropractic Colleges prefer applicants who have completed a four year College Degree.  It is possible that in the near future, only applicants who have the Bachelors’ Degree will be considered.

After completing college, you must apply to one of the Chiropractic Colleges that are accredited by the Council On Chiropractic Education.  At present there are twenty-one such colleges.  For information on the accredited college nearest you, go to:

Programs in Chiropractic Colleges are of four years duration.  They cover such subjects as pathology, biochemistry, microbiology, physiology, neurology, and anatomy.  In the final two years, there is greater emphasis on hands-on experience in spinal adjustment and manipulation, physiotherapy, orthopedics, and geriatrics.

After graduating from the four year program, you will be entitled to the designation of Doctor of Chiropractics.

Chiropractors need a state license to practice.  Although states my vary slightly in their requirements, obtaining a license involves passing a state exam.

To maintain their license, Chiropractors must complete an annual, updated training program.
