Although this type of work may be difficult at times, it is also extremely rewarding as it helps preserve one of our riches natural resources for generations to come.
Forest and conservation workers must be hardy individuals, accustomed to physical labor, and prepared to work outside in any weather, often in isolated areas. Jobs are concentrated mainly in the Northwest and Southwest. Some jobs may be seasonal.
Forest and Conservation workers learn many of their skills while on the job. There are summer jobs for tree planters and maintenance personal which can give students a taste of what life is like for career forest and conservation workers.
To start a career as a Forest and Conservation Worker, a High School Degree is necessary. There are some state-run programs that are conducted in the field and emphasize mainly the conservation of forest reserves.
Vocational and Technical Schools as well as Community colleges offer two year courses leading to a technical degree. These training courses cover wildlife and forest management as well as conservation. As part of this training field courses may be offered which provide experience in the area of logging and equipment operation.
The duties of Forest and Conservation Workers are many and varied. Forestry workers fight insects and disease that threaten forest growth. They use power and hand saws to remove diseased and undesirable growth. They spray to control disease and insects using fungicides and insecticides. They use heavy equipment to clear brush from roadsides and campsites. They assist in controlled burns and mark, measure, and count trees, usually under the direction of a professional forester. They plant seedlings to reforest areas destroyed by fire or disease. Some forest workers assist in forest nurseries and tree farms, tending seedlings and pruning new growth.

Conservation and forestry work can be dangerous, especially when machinery is involved or work is being done in deep woods far from civilization. Safety is always a concern and safety equipment, such as hardhats, eye protection, and heavy work boots are essential.

Those interested in a career in this field must love the outdoors, be strong, healthy, mature, and able to work alone or as part of a team. They must have good judgment and be able to make quick decisions in potentially dangerous situations. They must have considerable mechanical aptitude, and good coordination. The ability to maintain and repair equipment is essential. The number of jobs in this field is gradually increasing. If you are interested in a career as a Forest and Conservation Worker, inquire about training programs at your local educational institutes and colleges.

To advance in this field a bachelors degree in forestry or a related specialty is necessary.
Forest and conservation Workers strive daily to develop, maintain, and protect the health and beauty of our natural surroundings. This is a challenging and rewarding career for those who qualify.
