How To Get A Job As An Airline Attendant

The airline industry is growing by leaps and bounds so if you are interested in becoming an Airline/Flight Attendant, start making your plans now.

Flight Attendants work as part of a team. They are stable, mature individuals with good eyesight and hearing.   Flight Attendants are able to remain calm and confident even under trying conditions, always putting the welfare of passengers ahead of their own, especially during on-board emergencies or evacuations.

To be a successful Flight Attendant, you must be prepared to work long hours, often weekends and holidays. You may be required to spend days away from home and fly in all kinds of weather. You will cheerfully greet passengers, help them get settled, store baggage, go over emergency procedures, and serve their needs during the flight. Attendants must be prepared to handle any in-flight emergencies such as accidents, illnesses, and stressed or disruptive passengers.

Before passengers arrive, Flight Attendants meet with other personnel to receive last minute instructions, and make sure all equipment is in working order. After the flight, they meet again to go over any problems that may have occurred, check equipment again, and fill in flight reports.

If you wish to become a Flight Attendant and are still in High School, get any volunteer experience you can which involves working as part of a group and serving the public. Take any courses available in English, Psychology, and communications. Fluency in a second language is a great asset, and is a must if you want to work internationally.

After High School, get a college education, one that stresses subjects such as psychology, communications, English, history. Although in the past Flight Attendants were hired with only a High School education, today’s employers give preference to those with a College Degree. After College, apply to the airline of your choice. Each airline has their own training program which involves such things as evacuation and safety procedures, first aid, and international considerations.

There are many advantages to a career as a Flight Attendant such as dental and medical insurance, bonuses, and free or highly subsidized flights for the Attendant and their family members. Successful Flight Attendants are able to advance to positions as supervisors, instructors and managers.

There is a great deal of competition for positions in this desirable field so make sure to get the best education you can afford. Some Colleges provide Flight Attendant Training. Graduates from these programs are often given preference so investigate all possibilities and start planning now.
