How To Get A Job As An Office Clerk

Office Clerks are an essential part of any organization in which they work.  If they are employed in large companies, they may specialize in one area or another, but in smaller companies, they may take part in almost all aspects of the business.

Job opportunities for Office Clerks are excellent.  If you become an Office Clerk you may be employed in retail outlets, distribution centers, manufacturing companies, government offices, and a wide variety of other businesses, and industries.

In order to get a job as an Office Clerk, you must be hard working, reliable, adaptable, cheerful, detail oriented, able to work well with others, and able to take orders and react promptly.  You must be a quick learner, a good listener, well-spoken, and polite.  You must also speak English well.

Office Clerks perform a wide variety of tasks, depending on the type and size of the company in which they are employed, and their level of education and skill.  Among other things, Office Clerks answer phones, relay messages, keep records, do inventory, type, and file.  They may also make restaurant, hotel, and travel reservations, handle public inquiries, and assist with payroll..  They may make photocopies, send faxes, do data entry, sort mail, proofread documents, and keep records.  Some Office Clerks act as assistants to one or more managers or administrators.  Office Clerks take on any task they are able to in an effort to allow other staff to concentrate on their specific area of expertise.

Education

Those who wish to get jobs as Office Clerks should first obtain a high school diploma.  High school courses that would be useful are English, mathematics, business practices, computers, and any courses that relate to office procedures or accounting.  It would be to your advantage, when seeking employment, to have had some office experience, whether paid or voluntary.

Although many Office Clerks find employment with just a high school diploma, it would be advantageous to have some formal training from a technical school, vocational school, or community college.  In these institutions, you would want to take courses in word processing, business practices, accounting, and computer technology.  With this formal training you would be eligible for more prestigious positions as well as for advancement.

Some colleges and other educational institutions offer on-line courses for those wishing to become Office Clerks.

With experience and education, Office Clerks can advance to more specialized positions in payroll, bookkeeping, and word-processing.
