How To Get A Job As A Butler

To become a successful Butler, you will need a wide variety of knowledge combined with the right personality.  Being a Butler may be challenging and may necessitate some long working days, but the job does provide exciting variety, as well as room and board, and  benefits.

Although some Butlers are employed by luxury hotels and agencies providing as-needed, household personnel, most work full time for private individuals in large households, always wealthy ones.  Their employers may be titled, famous, or infamous, but they are always wealthy.  Experienced professional butlers are well-paid.

In return for high wages, butlers give their undivided loyalty, and attention to their employers.  Butlers are on call twenty-four hours a day to promptly and competently serve their employers needs and wishes, as well as to deal with any household emergencies.

To get a job as a successful professional Butler, you must be respectful, loyal, well-spoken, authoritative, patient, discreet, and confident.  You must have impeccable manners and be well groomed.  You must have excellent management skills, excellent leadership skills, and excellent communication skills.  Butlers today also need to have good computer skills.  A second language is always an asset.

Butlers  have a variety of duties depending on their employers and the households in which they work.  In general, Butlers are in charge of running the household and supervising the staff to make sure all staff perform their duties explicitly.  They may organize banquets as well as daily meals, provide for guests and entertainment, see that the house is kept spotless, hire and fire staff, manage the care of vehicles, take care of household moves, order supplies, keep household records, deal with tradesmen, and oversee repairs and landscaping.

Butlers may also take care of their employers personal needs.   Butlers are required to greet their employers and any guests, serve refreshments, make travel arrangements, and drive their employers if required.  They must be able to instantly contact and obtain additional staff and other resources to serve their employers needs and the needs of his/her friends and guests.  To perform all these tasks efficiently, Butlers need a vast store of knowledge covering such things as etiquette, fine dining, household management, cleaning techniques, and home security.

Education

Professional Butlers today need to have a college degree.  If you want to get a job as a Butler, you need a well rounded education, including courses in English, History, and Political Science.  You must both be a speak and act as a professional.

If you think you have the skills and personality needed to become a professional Butler, you need to attend a professional institute specializing in the training of Butlers.  These course may vary but most extend from eight to twelve weeks.  Some do provide placement services.  Butler training teaches all the skills you need to professionally serve an employer and run a household.
