How To Get A Job As A News Anchor

This job may seem glamorous but, it is a job that is hard to get, and involves hard work to keep.  To get the job you must be determined, persistent, and even aggressive.   To keep it you must be willing to work long hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays.  You must be a good listener, willing to learn, and have an excellent command of the English language.  You must have a good speaking voice and enunciate clearly.  You must be able to think on your feet and work well as part of a team.   You must be able to create a visual story with words, and you will only have one chance to get it right.  You must be willing to travel if necessary, and work long hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.  At times, you may be required to work through the night to prepare a story.

News Anchors must appear poised and visually presentable.  This does not mean you have to look like a model.  It means you must be neatly dressed, move well, exude confidence, and be comfortable in front of the camera.

Basically, News anchors report the news, often specializing in such areas as sports, weather, crime, or national news.  They work together with producers, writers and other staff members.  Anchors do not usually write the news but they may assist.  They may conduct interviews or do research for ongoing projects.  Once the news is ready to report, the Anchor will read it over, and discuss any needed changes with the producer and writers.  Although News Anchors may actually be reading the news, they do so in such a way that they appear to be speaking spontaneously.  After completing their report, they may review their work in an attempt to do even better next time.  Then they will begin to prepare for the next broadcast.

Education

Those interested in becoming News Anchors should get the best education possible.  Start in high school by studying English, history, political science, and speech and drama.  Take part in debates, and dramatic productions.  Work for the school newspaper.  Volunteer at the local radio station or cable network. Learn all you can about news reporting and production.

It is essential for News Anchors to get a college education in order to be well-rounded individuals.  Consider a degree in communications, journalism, or broadcasting.  Include some courses in psychology and sociology.  One of the best choices would be to take an accredited college course in broadcast journalism.  Some colleges have their own local radio stations.  See if a local News Anchor will chat with you about what you need to do to get a step up in the field.

With sufficient training, your next step would be to get an internship at a local station where you would have the opportunity to learn all aspects of the trade.  You will have the best opportunity for employment if you are willing to start off in a small station, work hard, and gain some recognition.
