They may prepare the operating room, checking supplies and ensuring that all surgical machinery is operating properly. They may transport patients to surgery. During surgeries, Technologists may pass instruments, assist in retractions, help with anesthetics, prepare and dispose of specimens, assist with sutures, and apply dressings. After surgery they may transport the patient to recovery, and clean and restock the operating room.
Education
Surgical Technologists need to graduate from an accredited training program. Entrance to these programs requires a high school diploma. Courses to take while in high school include English, biology, chemistry, and any other science or health courses offered.

Accredited training programs for Surgical Technologists are offered in the military as well as in community colleges, vocational schools, and universities. The programs run from nine months to two years. Employers prefer to hire Surgical Technologists who are certified. Certification required graduation for a two year accredited training program and the passing of the certification exam.
