How To Get A Job As A Make-up Artist

With a growing emphasis on appearance and public image, and an obsession with fashion and entertainment, skilled Make-up Artists are in demand.
Make-up Artists work for film studios, theaters, model agencies, television stations, magazines, photographic studios, and cosmetic companies. They may work with actors, models, musicians, politicians, or the general public. Once established, Make-up Artists may choose to freelance.
Make-up Artists, that work for places such as theaters, magazines, or cosmetic companies , usually work a regular eight hour day and may receive benefits. Others may be required to work on an as-needed basis and provide their own insurance and pensions. Work may at times be rushed and stressful, but it will always be exciting.
To be successful, Make-up Artists must combine skill and creativity. Although areas of specialization may have different requirements, the basic skills needed remain the same. Make-up Artists must have a good understanding of basic skin color and tone. They must be familiar with all the make-up aids available. They must have imagination, an eye for fashion trends, good people skills, and, as they may work alongside of photographers, hair stylists, and directors, they must have the ability to work well with others.
Some Make-up Artists use their skill merely to make people look more attractive, less tired, and younger. Others must create a look that depicts a particular personality, a historical character, or serves to harmonize clothing, accessories and make-up into a unified ‘look’.

Some Make-up Artists specialize in creating the look of monsters, animals, and even objects. The realistic depiction of scars and wounds is a specialty. Make-up Artists must always take into account relevant weather conditions, lighting, and length of time the make-up is needed. No matter what the job, the make-up must always be flawless and photograph well.
There is no specific Education necessary to become a Make-up Artist. It is a combination of skill, creativity, and passion. It is essential to have an intimate knowledge of make-up techniques, so a training course in cosmetology which emphasizes fashion and stage make-up, is almost essential. Some training in fashion would also be useful. There would also be some on-the-job training involved.
Beginning Make-up Artists may be able to find an apprenticeship program. It is helpful to create a portfolio, volunteer in an area where you would like to work, speak to artists that you admire, create a website, visit fashion events, and be patient. With time and talent, you will be able to work your way up to the position you desire.
Successful Make-up Artists are able to specialize, open their own businesses, and even design their own line of make-up.
