How To Get A Job As Part Of The Coast Guard

The United States Coast Guard is considered as part of the Department of Homeland Security, and as such is involved with National Security.  The Job of the Coast Guard is to serve and protect.  The Coast Guard patrols U.S. waters and in times of war, assists in patrolling foreign waters.  They conduct search and rescue missions, and watch for any signs of criminal activity such as the running of drugs or other contraband.  They assist in underwater research and mapping.

Be aware that for many of the jobs offered by the Coast Guard, it is not necessary to enlist or even go to sea.  There are over 200 types of such jobs, including jobs in computer technology, accounting, engineering, and administration. The education for these jobs is as job-specific as it is for any other area of the population.  It would also be wise to swim well, and know C.P.R. though these skills are not essential.  There are also some part time positions available.

Employment opportunities for civilians and enlisted men alike are excellent.  Salaries are good and benefits are excellent.  The requirements for those who are joining the enlisted, the requirements are more demanding.

Those who are interested in a career with the Coast Guard must be mentally mature and physically fit.  They must be willing and able to work long hours, often under stressful and even dangerous conditions.  They must have good communication skills, able to function as part of a team, and dedicated to the protection of the homeland.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

If you wish to be recruited by the Coast Guard, you must be a United States citizen or registered alien.  You must be from seventeen to twenty-seven years of age be fluent in the English Language, and have a high school diploma.  Some exceptions may be made.  Those recruited must pass a credit check and criminal background check.  They must be free of felony convictions and must be physically fit enough to pass a very rigorous medical exam.  You will also have to pass an Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Test.  Those who show an exceptional aptitude during this test may be admitted with only a GED.

Even though only a high school diploma is required, some positions demand a complete four year College Degree.  It is always wise to get the best education you can with a view to possible promotion in the future.

Candidates that pass the recruitment requirements must then complete a period of basic training with has both academic and physical components covering such things as history,tactical maneuvers, marksmanship, on board fir fighting, swimming, first aid, and drill.
